I can’t tell you how many pounds of this delicious baked good that I had for breakfast during all my years as a student in LAUSD. Well except for those days when I had the Peanut Butter Bread.

I found this recipe online and am super excited to give it a try to bring back the nostalgia of my days in LAUSD. Hope you all enjoy it too.

OLD FASIONED COFFEE CAKE – 1954

  • 21/2 – Cups of Baker’s (AP) Flour
  • 1 – Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 – Cup + 1 Tbsp. of Granulated Sugar
  • 1 – tsp. of Salt
  • 1 – tsp. of Nutmeg
  • 3/4 – Cup Salad (Vegetable) Oil
  • 1 – tsp. of Cinnamon
  • 1 – tsp. of Baking Soda
  • 1 – tsp of Baking Powder
  • 1 – Large egg
  • 1 – Cup of Buttermilk

Combine the first six ingredient. Mix until crumbly. Reserve 1/2 cup of the above for topping. To this add the cinnamon. combine the last four ingredients and add to first mixture. Blend together but do not over-mix.

Put in a greased 9″ x 13″ cake pan. Sprinkle the cinnamon crumb topping over the top of the batter.

Bake at 350o to 375o for 25 to 30 minutes.
